This group of works came about following an extended period during which I shot a lot of film (both 35mm and 120mm). One day when a set of negatives came back from the lab I was looking for an image I had taken at the end of a roll and took out of the “neg” folder the cut off end.
I was fascinated by the part image, which then merged into the effect of the chemical development process. I went back through hundreds of “neg” folders taking out the two ends. I began scanning these negatives and then “played” around with the resultant image in a digital editing suite.
The process gave a set of results of both completely abstract images and images which were part image/part chemical effect. I was interested that the process took on the analogue/chemical process and the digital scanning/manipulations in the finished images, with the process having both elements of accident/chance and control/manipulation.
